St John’s College Water Treatment Project

Securing a Reliable Water Supply for a Leading Educational Institution

Between November 2023 and March 2024, St John’s College partnered with Marlin Technologies Group (MTG) to develop a sustainable water treatment solution capable of meeting the daily water requirements of both the school and boarding facilities.

The objective was to maximise the use of available borehole water, reduce dependence on municipal supply, and provide a consistent source of high-quality potable water that complies with SANS 241 drinking water standards.

Following a detailed assessment of the site’s water quality and operational requirements, MTG designed and installed a fully automated treatment plant tailored to the College’s needs.

About the Water Treatment System

The treatment system was engineered based on comprehensive water analysis and borehole production capacity to ensure reliable treatment performance and long-term operational efficiency.

System Features

  • Hydrogen peroxide dosing for oxidation and water conditioning
  • Multi-stage media filtration for effective removal of suspended solids and impurities
  • Micron filtration for enhanced water polishing
  • Water softening system to reduce hardness and protect infrastructure
  • Chlorination system for disinfection and bacteria control
  • UV sterilisation for additional microbiological protection
  • Fully automated control and monitoring system

As part of the project, MTG also delivered the supporting infrastructure required for successful operation, including:

  • Civil works and site preparation
  • Installation of a prefabricated treatment plant housing unit
  • Three 52,000-litre reservoir storage tanks, providing a combined storage capacity of 156,000 litres

To ensure long-term reliability and compliance, MTG provides ongoing monthly water quality testing and monitoring.

In addition, MTG conducted comprehensive training for the College’s maintenance team, equipping staff with the knowledge and skills required to operate and maintain the system effectively.

By reducing municipal water consumption and making better use of available groundwater resources, the project is expected to achieve a return on investment within approximately 24 months.
