Enhancing Water Security Through Smart Infrastructure Planning
Marlin Technologies Group (MTG) commenced its partnership with St Mary’s School in 2022, focusing on improving the reliability and efficiency of the Junior School’s water infrastructure.
The project began with a comprehensive audit of the existing water reticulation systems to identify vulnerabilities, improve water resilience, and reduce the impact of municipal water interruptions on daily school operations.
Following the audit, MTG developed and implemented a strategic water management solution designed to optimise the use of both municipal and borehole water resources across the Junior School campus.
About the Water Management Solution
The project focused on redesigning and reconfiguring the water reticulation network to ensure critical services remain operational during municipal supply disruptions.
System Features
- Installation of a dedicated municipal potable water ring main serving the Junior School
- Integration of Borehole 2 as the primary irrigation water source
- Automated changeover capability to Borehole 1 when required
- Connection of all irrigation infrastructure to the borehole water supply network
- Connection of all 50 Junior School toilets to the borehole water system
- Installation of an additional 10,000-litre water storage tank
- Integration of all borehole reticulation pumps into the school’s generator backup system
- Improved water distribution and operational resilience throughout the campus
The solution was designed to maximise the use of available groundwater resources while ensuring essential facilities remain operational regardless of municipal water availability.

The dedicated borehole reticulation network ensures uninterrupted irrigation, protecting sports fields, gardens, and landscaped areas throughout the year.
Uninterrupted Toilet Facilities
All 50 toilets within the Junior School are supplied from the borehole storage system, ensuring continued functionality during municipal outages.
Backup Power Protection
By connecting all borehole pump systems to the school’s generator infrastructure, the water supply remains operational during power outages.
Reduced Municipal Dependence
The optimised use of borehole water reduces reliance on municipal infrastructure and contributes to long-term water sustainability.
Excellent Return on Investment
Based on reduced municipal water consumption and improved operational efficiency, the project is projected to achieve a return on investment within approximately 16 months.
