BBG The Point Water Recovery & Treatment Project

Transforming a Natural Water Source into a Valuable Asset

Located at the foot of Table Mountain, BBG The Point experienced a continuous inflow of groundwater that naturally accumulated in basement sumps. This water was traditionally pumped directly into the stormwater system, resulting in a missed opportunity to utilise a valuable water resource.

The property management team approached Marlin Technologies Group (MTG) to investigate whether this naturally occurring water could be treated and reused to supplement the building’s municipal water supply.

Following a detailed assessment, MTG designed and installed a fully automated water treatment system in 2018, transforming an operational challenge into a sustainable water management solution.

About the Water Treatment System

The treatment plant was designed to capture groundwater collected in the basement sumps, treat it to potable standards, and integrate it into the building’s water supply system.

The treated water is stored in a bulk storage tank before being distributed throughout the building, providing an additional source of high-quality water and reducing reliance on municipal supply.

System Features

  • Collection and recovery of naturally occurring groundwater
  • Multi-stage media filtration for the removal of suspended solids
  • Micron filtration for enhanced water polishing
  • Chlorination system for disinfection and bacteria control
  • UV sterilisation for additional microbiological protection
  • Bulk treated water storage tank
  • Fully automated operation and control system

The treatment process consistently produces water that meets SANS 241 potable drinking water standards, ensuring a safe and reliable water source for the building.

MTG continues to provide water quality testing and sampling as required to verify system performance and compliance.

Results & Benefits

Increased Water Security

The treated groundwater provides a supplementary water source, reducing dependence on municipal supply and improving resilience during water interruptions.

Improved Water Pressure

Following the commissioning of the system, building management reported a significant improvement in water pressure on the upper floors, enhancing the overall user experience for tenants and occupants.

Sustainable Water Utilisation

Water that was previously discharged into the stormwater system is now recovered, treated, and beneficially reused, contributing to improved environmental sustainability.

High-Quality Potable Water

The treatment system consistently delivers water that complies with SANS 241 drinking water standards, ensuring safe and reliable use throughout the facility.

Strong Financial Return

By reducing municipal water consumption and making productive use of an existing water source, the project is expected to achieve a return on investment within approximately 36 months.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

The BBG The Point Water Recovery Project demonstrates MTG’s ability to identify innovative water management opportunities and convert underutilised resources into long-term operational benefits.

Through advanced treatment technology and sustainable design, MTG helped transform a continuous groundwater challenge into a dependable source of potable water and improved building performance.
